About Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury, Inc.
Literacy Volunteers was founded in Syracuse, New York in 1962. It quickly grew into a national organization with affiliates throughout the U.S. In 2002, Literacy Volunteers of America merged with Laubach Literacy to form ProLiteracy Worldwide, the largest adult literacy organization in the world.
Ruth Johnson Colvin was shocked when she read a 1961 Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper article that stated there were over 11,000 people in her county who could not read or write well. She began speaking with local social service agencies, community leaders, and church groups. With the help of reading experts, she developed a means to train volunteers to tutor adults. In 1962, she started Literacy Volunteers of America. In 2002, Literacy Volunteers merged with Laubach Literacy to form ProLiteracy America.
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury (LVGW) was founded in 1974. As an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, we are proud to be a member of a national and international network of community-based education programs. LVGW is located in the lower level of the Silas Bronson Library, Waterbury.
LVGW strives to meet the literacy needs of adults in the Greater Waterbury area residing in the following 14 towns: Waterbury, Wolcott, Plymouth, Thomaston, Prospect, Naugatuck, Beacon Falls, Oxford, Cheshire, Bethlehem, Middlebury, Southbury, Woodbury, and Watertown/Oakville.
LVGW offers free programs for adults:
- Basic Literacy (BL) for adults who speak English but read and write at very low levels
- English as a Second Language (ESL) for immigrants and refugees who need English instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English
- Family Literacy designed for parents of children in pre-school and elementary school.
LVGW is especially dedicated to building workforce and job readiness skills to build self-confidence and self-sufficiency.
